The role of government in forest certification will be explored in a policy forum during the next UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) timber committee session.

The UN ECE has extended an open invitation to attend “Forest Certification – Do governments have a role?”, to be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on September 29.

Forum debates will centre on whether governments should use forest certification to promote sustainable forest management. Certification’s pros and cons will also be discussed, as well as how governments can promote trade in wood and forest products which is sustainable.

Presentations will include the standpoint of different governments and stakeholder perspectives. A panel discussion and open debate will also feature.

The 63rd UN ECE timber committee session will take place on September 27-30.
