The project, in the Lower Eastside Valley, Ancoates, involved the design, manufacture and erection in timber frame of the fifth and sixth storeys of a four-storey reinforced concrete frame.
Timber frame was chosen due to its construction speed, Oregon having secured the contract after the previous sub-contractor failed to meet the client’s brief.
Matching timber frame to the existing concrete structure did not present Oregon with any particular problems, although the design process had to take into account the effect of any collapse at the six-storey height.
Timber frame also created a smaller footprint than the concrete section, allowing the creation of open walkways and balconies around the top storeys.
Oregon director Rod Lawson, said: “We were able to react very quickly and design, manufacture and erect the whole job in just four months.”
