Prince Charles has appealed for world leaders to join together to save the rainforests in an interview with The Sun newspaper while on a visit to Indonesia.
The prince, who founded his Rainforest Project last year, told Sun readers that though the credit crunch was causing hardship to many people, the “climate crunch” would affect everybody.
He said the rainforests were the earth’s life-support system and we were close to “switching them off”.
During his Indonesian visit, the Prince saw how farmland is being restored to its original rainforest state in the Harapan forest.
Earlier this year Prince Charles launched the website for the Rainforests Project.
He has discussed the issue on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and had a column published in The Daily Telegraph.
The prince would like to see governments, businesses and consumers contribute £30bn a year in the fight against climate change through a mechanism enabling poorer countries to value their trees.
