Demand from England for long lengths has led Södra Timber to invest SKr11.5m in its Mönsterås sawmill.
The investment will allow the mill, which serves the UK market, to produce 30-40,000m³ of 6m lengths a year.
“We’ve been seeing an increasing demand for 6m lengths for some time now, particularly from the English market,” said Södra Timber president Peter Nilsson. “None of our 10 sawmills can currently produce this product, which is why we’ve made the decision to invest in the Mönsterås mill.”
Mr Nilsson told TTJ that production of the new lengths would come on stream by the end of 2008. He said the product would be cheaper than finger-jointed lengths being supplied to the UK from Germany.
He said there was an additional need for longer lengths due to the trend of houses becoming higher.
Södra said it could increase production further if demand grew.
