The contract will see DHL deliver SCA’s timber products to DIY retailers and builders merchants across the UK and the Irish Republic from the company’s national distribution centre in Stoke-on-Trent. It will also manage planning and reporting.

The operation will use DHL’s bespoke freight exchange and ProRoute systems which are designed to optimise transport routes by identifying backhaul opportunities and eliminating empty vehicle runs.

SCA Timber Supply commercial director Andrew Garner said outsourcing its logistics operation continued a supply chain efficiency drive and increased flexibility

He said DHL’s capacity would enable SCA to expand its offering to the market and contain distribution costs that have been escalating around the UK.

“We have already invested £2.6m in new systems in the past nine months. Reducing environmental impact is central to the SCA Group’s ethos and using DHL Exel Supply Chain’s logistics expertise will bring positive benefits,” said Mr Garner.

As part of the agreement around 30 SCA employees were transferred to DHL.
