The number of businesses supplying Scottish hardwoods and hardwood products has increased by 50% since 1996, with many of these “already involved in adding value activities”.

So says a sector survey completed by John Clegg Consulting for the Scottish Hardwood Timber Marketing Development Group.

The hardwood sector in Scotland remains small, it acknowledges, but most participants have witnessed significant growth in turnover and profits since 1996 and anticipate further expansion in 2003.

Two-thirds of survey respondents were planning significant investments in kilns, machinery, storage, stock and/or marketing over the course of this year.
