Shropshire sawmiller ETC Sawmills Ltd is to make redundancies across its Ellesmere site due to the credit crunch.

ETC managing director Colin Heskins told staff by letter that as many as 19 jobs will have to be cut from its 100-plus workforce due to a decline in the volume and value of business..

“It is envisaged that up to 19 jobs may be affected from across the operation,” the letter read.

“At this stage, we have not looked at those positions which may be at risk of redundancy but plan to do this over the next few days.”

The company has been operating in the Ellesmere area since the late 1950s, with two sawmill lines currently producing 56,000m³ of sawn timber per year for the fencing and pallet industries. It also has four 40ft treatment vessels processing timber with Arch’s Tanalith E preservative treatment to produce Tanatone Brown and Tanalith E Green treated products.
