More than 50 firefighters from seven stations descended on Somerlap Forest Products for a major fire exercise.

Somerset Fire Brigade sent seven pumps and five special appliances to the company’s retail centre at Mark near Wedmore where a simulated fire called for water to pumped from hydrants and a nearby stream.

Somerlap, a specialist timber product manufacturer, was chosen as its rural and open site allowed for a full-scale exercise.

Company health and safety officer Nigel Puddy said: ‘It gave us a chance to re-evaluate our emergency procedures. It also made us look at the way we store timber on site.’
