Stora Enso plans to cut its CO2 emissions by a fifth by 2020 as part of a strategy to reduce its carbon footprint.

It will target its production facilities and electricity and heat supplies, as well as outsourced activities such as transport and harvesting.

The 20% target will be achieved by increasing efficiencies within its production facilities while simultaneously replacing the use of fossil fuels with biomass, according to the company.

“Defining the carbon footprint is the first step in identifying business case opportunities to reduce emissions,” said head of sustainability Eija Pitkänen.

“We have now taken our commitment to the next level by setting a reduction target.”

The target was set out in Stora Enso’s annual report, where it described 2007 as as one of the most challenging years in its recent history.
