A free on-line sustainability benchmarking service was launched by Stephen Timms, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) minister for corporate and social responsibility, in London this week.
The service has been developed by researchers at the Universities of Sussex and Brighton with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the DTI, Biffaward and the Engineering Employers Federation.
Called PERFORM, the service currently covers 14 industrial sectors in the UK and EU, including timber.
Companies can enter their sustainability performance data onto a form on-line and they will then receive a sector-specific benchmarking report free of charge.
Project co-ordinator Dr Frans Berkhout said: “The aim is not to name and shame, but to support companies in assessing their strengths and weaknesses and where they stand relative to their competitors and companies in other sectors.”
