Tasmania should stop the practice of clear- felling and introduce alternatives, a Canadian ecologist has claimed.

Bull Beese, who helped to introduce variable retention logging in western Canada, said that using alternative logging methods could help the Tasmanian timber industry appease environmental groups and simultaneously maintain supply.

“It’s very positive because people are sitting down at the table working together rather than just out on the logging roads laying in front of bulldozers,” Mr Beese told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
