A timber-clad business hub in Berwick-upon-Tweed has been recognised for its contribution to the redevelopment of the town.

The £3m Berwick WorkSpace took silver in the Best Regeneration category at the Roses Design Awards 2008.

The office development offers 35 businesses in the area 10-59m² of office space, as well as conferencing facilities.

Untreated Scottish larch cladding, supplied by Russwood Ltd, has been used to make the building suitable for its surroundings, as well as providing the optimum environment for burgeoning businesses.

“From the outset, the principles of the WorkSpace’s design were concerned with making a well-connected and bustling courtyard building, in the heart of Berwick, which essentially provides a high quality incubation facility but with an architecture which is rich in views, light and character,” said Calum Duncan, of architect Malcolm Fraser Architects.

“I am certain that these are the qualities that the judges have understood and felt the building to be worthy of this award.”

Funded by One NorthEast, Northumberland Strategic Partnership, the European Regional Development Fund and Berwick and Northumberland Councils, Berwick WorkSpace is designed to encourage and support business growth in the town.
