New construction work in the UK was worth £49.7bn in 2003, according to provisional figures released by the DTI and National Statistics.
The report also shows repair and maintenance work was worth £42.8bn, giving a combined total of £92.6bn.
Public housing construction totalled £2bn, while private housing hit £13.1bn.
