Already a Facebook campaign is under way to try to reverse the decision, with more than 1,000 supporters giving their backing in just 24 hours.
Courses affected include BA (Hons) Furniture and FDA Furniture: Conservation, Restoration and Decorative Arts.
The university has committed to continue to teach students already studying on the courses and says the National School of Furniture will also continue at the university, while furniture design will still be taught at postgraduate level. Some 261 students are affected by the plans.
"It is very disappointing to hear the news that this provision is going to be removed, especially at a time when more young people are entering the furniture industry," said Lisa Williamson, furniture industry lead at Proskills UK.
Proskills and its National Skills Academy are working with the National School of Furniture, furniture industry and industry organisations to ensure the "much-needed" course provision can continue.
