Latvia’s largest sawmill, Vika Wood Ltd, has embarked on a €13m reconstruction designed to increase output and production quality.
The development will include increase kilning capacity, a new green sorting plant and new bandsaw. It is due to be completed by 2012.
Managing director Andris Krecers said the investment would double productivity and increase quality.
Current sawn timber production of 274,000m³ will rise to around 300,000m³ (kiln-dried sawn capacity).
“Sawing will become twice as efficient, which is a good step to maintain our competitiveness,” added Sampsa Auvinen, CEO of parent company Norvik Timber Industries.
Vika’s production, the majority of which is redwood, is sold in the Baltics, Europe, Japan, the Far East and north Africa.
