Laver makes southern statement

Arnold Laver's imposing two-storey stand, decked out in the company's yellow and black livery, was not only a product showcase, it was also a statement of its strategic intent to build its reputation as a nationwide operation.

“In the past we were known as a northern business, but that has changed significantly,” said managing director Andrew Laver. “The Olympics was a key moment for us in emphasising our strength and raising our profile in the south – we were on the timber supply panel and provided 50% of wood products on the London Games site. And I feel being here at Ecobuild reinforces our national coverage.”

Asked whether that meant more Laver sites in the south, Mr Laver said: “More likely larger depots, with larger amounts of stock.”

At the same time he stressed that the company wasn’t at Ecobuild just to fly the flag. “This is the thinking man's Interbuild; it has all the products but with that added focus on sustainability and design,” he said. “That means you have to come here with a story to tell and something new – it's no good just emphasising your range.”

Laver's new stories included modified-fibre-based Medite Tricoya, highlighting its moisture resistance by running a waterfall over it in a tank.

“Tricoya is a fantastic idea, an MDF you can use outside, a replacement for metal, composites, fibreglass,” said Mr Laver. “People are still scratching their heads as to its best application, but it clearly has potential in the marine and boat sector and many other areas. We have some ideas and really see it as product for the future.”

Also highlighted on the stand were Nevamar HPL and Canadian Fraser cladding. The former features an “armoured protection” coating making it ideal for high-wear environments, like schools and hospitals. Lodgepole pine Fraser cladding is pre-coloured and aimed at the contractor and DIY sector, supplied with accessories and fittings. “It achieves that New England look but is cheaper than western red cedar,” said Laver's Simon Tucker.
