Scotts embarks on new venture

Scotts of Thrapston’s new West Midlands business has reported increasing order intake as it taps the region’s demand for trussed rafters and engineered joists.

The new company -Scotts Timber Engineering -was established in January, to serve the West Midlands trussed rafter and engineered floor joist market.

"It's going very well, with very positive feedback from customers," said Richard Evans, managing director of Scotts Timber Engineering.

A design and management office has been established in Shirley, near Birmingham. Orders are being manufactured at the existing Scotts factory in Thrapston, Northamptonshire, while a search is made for a 20,000ft2 manufacturing site just south of Birmingham.

Mr Evans said he hoped a site would be secured around July-September.

The expansion effectively enables Scotts to reach the M40, M42 and M5 corridors.

Mr Evans said the company would also look at roof systems for the West Midlands operation.

"There is demand and a market out there for panellised roof systems. Scotts will have a roof system offering in the future," he said.

"We feel confident that the housebuilding market will turn a corner in the not too distant future and we wish to be prepared to make the most of that when it happens," added chairman David Scott.
