Sikkens adds colour

3 December 2005

Akzo Nobel's Sikkens range of coatings has been used to add colour and provide protection for timbers at a Cornish tin mine conversion.

Sikkens Rubbol and Cetol coatings were specified for the conversion of the disused Wheal Kitty tin mine in St Agnes into more than 700m2 of office accommodation.

Project architect Ben White from architects Lilly Lewarne chose Rubbol AZ in deep red for the balcony, cladding, fascias and soffits of the original engine house, while a biscuit coloured Cetol BL Opaque was employed on windows and doors.

Cetol BL Opaque, a water-borne alkyd/acrylic resin system which fitted in with local conservation policies, was used on interior and exterior timber, providing protection from weathering and sunlight and co-ordinating with the traditional stone construction of the original building.

Five new office units built around the engine house feature a biscuit and chocolate brown finish for the doors, windows and roofing details.
