Timber Expo: Devon company bucks glulam trend

5 October 2013

Devon company Bucklands Timber, which bills itself as “the only major glulam manufacturer in Britain”, demonstrated how value can be added to UK-grown timber.

The company was set up about a year ago by Bill Blight and Ralph and Robin Nicholson to produce a British-grown and manufactured alternative to glulam imported from Europe. It manufactures fingerjointed and glulam timbers from locally-grown larch and Douglas fir, as well as Swedish spruce.

All production is bespoke and the company also offers a design service. It aims to produce all curved beams from locally-grown timber, while straight beams made from European whitewood can be manufactured in five working days.

Director Robin Nicholson, who is a structural engineer, said contracts completed so far include glulam-framed canopies and a bridge to span a river in Cornwall.
