TTBS golf goes with a bang…

20 August 2011

…and a flash of lightning and torrential downpour but spirits were undampened. Retired TTBS general manager and National Golf Day organiser Malcolm Job reports

With hardly a drop of rain in the previous 10 years of the competition, the TTBS Golf Day on July 8 at Dalmahoy, Edinburgh, sponsored by BSW, suffered for the many years of good weather.

All went very well in the morning, but just after lunch the course was hit by a tremendous thunderstorm, with torrential rain flooding the course and inundating the hotel in a few places. Worst of all was the thunder and lightening. Trees were struck within a few feet of some of the golfers, and naturally the golf course officials stopped play and recalled all players back to the safety of the hotel.

After an hour or so of incessant rain, the course was flooded in many places, with sand even being washed out of some of the bunkers. The officials at Dalmahoy waited to see if conditions would improve, but eventually came to the conclusion that the course would remain closed for the rest of the day.

The TTBS organisers had to abandon the afternoon golf and therefore scored the competition on the morning rounds.

Two competitions

As the field of players had been originally split into two groups, one playing the singles competition in the morning and greensomes in the afternoon, with the other group playing greensomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon, the organisers had no choice but to have two separate competitions, for those who had played either the singles or the greensomes in the morning.

Sadly, this meant that all players missed out on one of the competitions, but at least provided a final list of worthy trophy winners, which appears below.

Despite this disruption, the organisers were able to hold the presentation dinner and Ian North, TTBS trustee, presented the prizes.

A special mention should be made of Chris Offa from BSW who ran the auction, with a total of £1,700 being bid by the generous trade guests and with an additional £790 raised from the raffle.

Alan Wheat Memorial Bowl

The whole day was dedicated to the memory of Alan Wheat who, before his untimely death earlier this year, had done so much in raising additional sponsorships to make the Golf Day such a success. In recognition of Alan’s contribution to the TTBS competition over many years, BSW donated a new trophy this year. The Alan Wheat Memorial Bowl was presented for the longest drive in the singles competition and was won by James Lewis of AB Lewis Ltd.

In addition to the magnificent support from BSW, additional sponsorships were provided by Arch Timber Protection, Cheshire Mouldings, Howie Forest Products, IADA, Taylor Made Timber, Ernest Bennett, and International Timber. The goody bags for the day were provided by Valmar, which had its latest sideloader on display near the first tee.

The TTBS would like to thank all the players and sponsors for their continuing support of this event and especially Eve Johnson of BSW for all the work she put in behind the scenes in making the day so successful.
