Wood Futures speakers cover distribution, development, design and delivery

20 June 2008

Wayne Hemingway, the fashion and house designer and chair of the Building for Life initiative, Tim Pollard, Wolseley head of sustainability, and Ben Cook, senior land developer at Barratt Developments, will be among the speakers at TTJ’s Wood Futures Conference on November 6.

This year’s conference, organised in association with Medite 2016 Forum, is entitled Countdown to Zero and will look at the implications for the timber supply chain of the government’s targets for all UK new housing to be zero carbon from 2016 and commercial construction potentially from 2019.

Mr Hemingway has long championed the need for the UK building sector to improve the quality of design and reduce the environmental impact of new housing. Initially he made his reputation as a fashion designer and founder of Red or Dead. He has since worked with Taylor Wimpey and Broadway Malyan on award-winning housing projects.

Mr Pollard has been in merchanting for 20 years and leads Wolseley’s environmental policy. He has also played a key role in the development of the company’s new £3.2m Sustainable Construction Centre, a showcase for its sustainable, energy-efficient and recycled building materials. The Centre was officially opened this week.

Mr Cook has been project manager for Barratt on its Hanham Hall housing development. The project marks a major step in the evolution of a new generation of zero carbon homes and is the first development to be selected by English Partnerships under its Carbon Challenge initiative. The latter forms part of the government’s strategy for tackling climate change. The houses at Hanham Hall will meet the top Level 6 of the government’s Code for Sustainable Homes and will be used to demonstrate that zero carbon homes are feasible and commercially viable.

Countdown to Zero takes place on November 6 at the Royal Festival Hall in London and is supported by the TTF and TRADA. For more details and tickets contact Natasha Denney, tel: 020 8269 7833, e-mail ndenney@progressivemediagroup.com
