Leeds youths learn about timber

BSW Timber has given a helping hand to disadvantaged youths from Leeds hoping for a career in the construction industry.

The group of 18-25 year-olds from the charity Leeds re' Build toured BSW Timber's sawmill at Carlisle before taking part in the company's one-day Constructive Timber Training Course this week.

The course, which is designed to improve knowledge of timber, focuses on hardwoods and softwoods, the properties of wood and the effect of different processes. The sessions explode many of the myths surrounding timber by giving a better understanding of its uses.

The group sat a short test and received a certificate of completion and a qualification approved by the Institute of Wood Science.

The group were part of the charity's Youth Build programme where participants complete a Foundation Construction Award in Carpentry and Joinery at a local college, increase their employability skills, complete CSCS health and safety tests, attend work experience placements and gain team-building skills.

BSW Timber marketing manager Bryan Crennell said the company was delighted to support such a worthwhile cause.

"We have a responsibility to teach those interested in a career in the construction industry about the basics and characteristics of timber. I am sure that the training and the tour will provide them with the right foundation to consider a career in the industry," he said.
