Recent frosts helped the harvest and retails prices are holding up on last year, said secretary Harry Brightwell. Depending on region and quality, retailers are reporting prices of £35-55 for a 6ft Nordman and £24-34 for spruce.
"The rain has been quite good for growing this year and they are growing well and looking green and healthy. There was a bit of concern about getting equipment into the field because the ground is so wet, but the recent frosts have made the ground a lot harder," Mr Brightwell said.
Severe frosts have cut the harvest in Scandinavian countries, while in the UK overcutting in previous years to meet demand for the popular 2m length have reduced supplies. The knock-on effect is that fewer taller trees are available.
"I am not hearing about any shortages, but anything 7ft and above might be more difficult to find," Mr Brightwell said.
