Secretary of state for international development Andrew Mitchell MP has praised the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) for its commitment to responsible business and industry leadership.
Speaking at the TTF’s annual dinner at the Park Lane Hotel on Wednesday, Mr Mitchell said the TTF’s Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) and The Federation’s work with the central government on the upcoming EU Timber Regulation “made a real difference to some of the poorest people” [who suffer from illegal logging].
“I congratulate the Timber Trade Federation on their industry leadership in this area,” he said.
“Tackling deforestation and illegal logging is a crucial part of the UK government’s work on climate change.
“Our support through the International Climate Fund means we are helping protect up to 39 million ha of forest – an area more than one and a half times the size of the UK – as well as the 1.2 billion people who rely on forests to survive.”
TTF chief executive John White thanked the minister for his comments on behalf of the timber industry.
He said the development of the RPP and the fact it was compulsory for members showed “our industry commitment and dedication to this most pressing global cause.
“We hope the new regulations, in conjunction with transparent, responsible business tools such as the RPP, will help increase the demand for timber products and, in turn, lead to greater areas of sustainably managed forest cover.”
