Sales at building and living, which includes timber, were down 6.7% at €429m as a result of lower volumes in Japan, while earnings were down 8.3% to €22m on lower volumes and lower prices.

Earnings overall for the third quarter were €210m, compared with €184m a year ago on sales that were 1.5% down at €2.5bn. However, the company said sales excluding the structurally declining paper business were up 3%.

Renewable packaging continued to head the business with a 30% increase in operational earnings with biomaterials outstripping timber at €24m.

Norwegian timber company Moelven increased operating profits in the third quarter by NKr46m from a year before.

The company reported higher prices for finished products and greater activity and higher prices in the modular building and glulam sectors. Revenues overall rose 7% to NKr2.1bn and profits to NKr18m from a loss of NKr29m.
