The founder and chairman of the former Colchester-based Transatlantic Hardwood Ltd, Richard Covill, died on November 1 at his home in Virginia, US, after a long battle against cancer.

Mr Covill was a well-known figure in the timber trade, particularly for establishing direct links between producers and users of North American hardwoods and creating strong relationships between them. He will be remembered by those who worked with him for his “hard work, decency and entrepreneurial spirit”.

A celebration of his life took place at the Culpeper United Methodist church in Virginia on November 7.
