A Biffaward grant of £66,388 will allow the Forest Products Research Centre (FPRC) to undertake a major research project into the bio-recycling of preservative treated woodwaste.
The project is part of a research programme to develop a large-scale sustainable waste management system for preservative treated wood waste using bioremediation and biodeterioration.
Bioremediation uses micro-organisms to transform toxic substances into less harmful forms while biodeterioration uses white and brown rot wood decay fungi.
The funding, which includes contributions from Arch Timber Protection, CSI Wood Protection Ltd and Osmose, will be used to test the wood decay fungi for tolerance to a variety of wood preservatives and decay capacity on treated wood. The rate and extent of bioremediation and biodeterioration will also be studied.
