The line-up for TRADA’s In Touch with Timber conference has been strengthened with the addition of Mark Sowter, Tesco head of environmental construction.

He will join keynote speaker Alison Brooks of Alison Brooks Architects and Simon Smith, director of Ramboll Whitbybird, at the London event on May 19.

Mr Sowter joined Tesco in the late 90s and took up his present position in 2007 with a brief to deliver Tesco’s future environmental store design. The first of these opened in January this year at Cheetham Hill, Manchester, and features a glulam frame.

His talk is entitled “The true economics of timber in a recession – a client’s perspective”.

The afternoon programme is divided into workshops, specifically aimed at architects or engineers. Delegates may select three of the six topics offered.

Workshops for architects include “Use of timber cladding in refurbishment’ (TRADA senior consultant architect Patrick Hislop RIBA); “Timber & thermal mass” (Craig White, director, White Design); and “Innovations in wood – wood modifications” (Dr Andrew Pitman, TRADA Technology).

Now into its fifth year, In Touch with Timber is aimed at architects, engineers, specifiers and other construction industry professionals.
